Cardano ADA Card Shutdown and Whale Selling Cloud an Already Shaky October

Cardano ADA news today is dominated by two converging headwinds: the abrupt end of the ecosystem’s flagship Visa payment card and a wave of heavy whale selling that has dragged the token down sharply from its recent monthly high.

The official Cardano Card account announced that the multi-chain crypto Visa card will be discontinued on October 31, 2026, with the decision driven by a change in business direction at partner Wirex, whose partnership with the program will also end on that date.

The closure stems from Wirex’s strategic transition to a non-custodial model and its decommissioning of custodial infrastructure — meaning the card product itself was not the root cause of the shutdown.

The payment card originated from a November 2025 partnership between EMURGO and Wirex, announced at the Cardano Summit, and had been integrated into the Wirex application serving more than six million customers across 130 countries.

The card enabled users to spend over 685 cryptocurrencies, including ADA, BTC, ETH, and USDC, anywhere Visa is accepted.

Whether a non-custodial Cardano card still arrives in 2026, and whether Wirex or another provider would build it, has not been confirmed.
For ADA holders who relied on the card as a day-to-day spending tool, the October 31 deadline is now the most pressing date on the calendar.

The card news arrives at a moment of significant price pressure.
Cardano has fallen 15.70% over the past seven days to approximately $0.234, as large investors reduced their holdings by more than 110 million tokens and network participation weakened.

Crypto analyst Ali Martinez reported on October 13 that Cardano whales had sold more than 110 million ADA over five days, citing Santiment data.

CoinGlass data shows 24-hour long volumes of $342 million against $383 million in short volumes, with Cardano’s long/short reading dropping to 0.86 and staying below 1 since October 5.

Making the picture more complex, Cardano’s underlying network is flashing a strikingly different signal.
During Epoch 660, the blockchain processed 1,780,896 transactions, surpassing the previous record of 1,566,974 set in November 2021 and marking a new five-year high, with the network averaging 83.83 transactions per block.

Monthly network revenue also climbed to $136,600.
However,
daily active addresses declined 41.36%, falling from 27,248 to 15,977, according to Santiment figures.
The divergence between record transaction counts and shrinking active address counts has left analysts debating whether the throughput gains reflect genuine adoption or are being driven by a narrower base of participants.

On October 15, ADA fell nearly 6% as investors assessed a hotter September US inflation report and its implications for the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

Despite the recent turbulence, Cardano has still risen 16.5% over the past 30 days, almost twice Bitcoin’s 8.4% gain during the same period, and was trading at about $0.23 as of October 16, up 5% in the last 24 hours.

For traders, the key technical levels are now clearly defined.
Analyst Ali Martinez warned that a deeper correction could come if whale selling continues to coincide with declining network activity, identifying $0.24 as the key level to watch and noting that a break below it could send ADA toward $0.21.

Nick Valdez, Chief Crypto Strategist at Verified Investing, has identified $0.21 as an attractive entry price for a long position, noting the level aligns with a key Fibonacci retracement zone on the daily ADA/USD chart at approximately $0.21057.

What to watch going forward: whether the Cardano ecosystem secures a replacement payment card partner before October 31, whether ADA can hold the $0.21–$0.23 support band as macro headwinds from inflation data persist, and whether the Amaru node —
an alternative Cardano node targeting a beta release around October 27, 2026, with mainnet block production targeted for November 2026
— can deliver a fresh technical catalyst. On-chain metrics and macro conditions are pulling in opposite directions, and how that tension resolves over the next two weeks will likely define ADA’s trajectory through year-end. This is not financial advice.
