XRP news today is dominated by a landmark banking development in Europe, even as the token itself battles sustained price pressure heading into the final stretch of October. Germany’s Sparkassen savings bank network — one of the largest retail banking systems on the continent — officially began rolling out cryptocurrency trading through its existing app on October 19, 2026,
with the service supporting Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Polygon, at a reported €0.99 order fee per trade.
Customers at the first participating Sparkassen can now buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies directly in the Sparkasse app, with the service confirmed live on Monday, October 19, by the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV).
DekaBank provides trading and custody, while participating savings banks decide individually when to introduce the service — and more than 230 institutions have reportedly expressed interest, with 30 to 40 additional banks expected to join each month.
The Sparkassen move is a significant moment for institutional adoption.
Germany’s Sparkassen savings banks have put the token in front of millions of conservative savers who have never touched crypto, though whether that translates into real buying pressure is a different question entirely.
Indeed, the launch did not spark an immediate rally.
On launch day, XRP’s price fell slightly, starting at around $1.31 and closing at about $1.30, and as of October 20 it trades at $1.29, a 5.8% drop over the past week.
That price weakness reflects several converging pressures.
Three developments are driving much of the decline: US spot XRP ETFs recorded their first weekly outflow in 14 weeks, up to 1 billion XRP held in Ripple’s escrow accounts will become eligible for release on November 1, and Bitcoin has fallen toward $83,000.
XRP fell 12.5% in October through October 19, 2026, and is now at a critical juncture, testing the $1.25 support level — a point where buyers have historically entered the market.
For XRP ETF holders specifically, the end of a long winning streak is worth watching.
After 13 straight weeks of investor confidence, something spooked XRP ETF holders into pulling money out for the first time since July, and the timing points to more than just a routine market dip.
That said, institutional interest has not evaporated entirely.
UMB Private Wealth Management has disclosed a position in the Franklin XRP ETF (XRPZ) in its Q3 2026 filing with the U.S. SEC, confirming a record of institutional exposure to XRP through a regulated investment product.
On the technical side of the XRP Ledger itself, a protocol-level upgrade is approaching.
The XRPL protocol update fixCleanup3_4_0 is set to activate Friday, October 23 at 09:34 UTC, assuming validator support stays above 80%, with 29 of 35 trusted validators having approved the fix as of October 19.
The patch closes a loophole that let burn-only accounts create new tokens, while Ripple’s native lending protocol stays inactive, still short of the 29 validator votes it needs.
Ordinary XRP holders will notice nothing on October 23 — no hard fork, no new address, no token swap, and no freeze on deposits or withdrawals.
Adding to the day’s headlines,
a newly activated XRP wallet received more than 82 million tokens in a single transaction worth more than $106 million, though the identity of the wallet owner remains unknown, leaving open the possibility that the funds belong to a private investor, a large institution, or an exchange.
Looking ahead, several catalysts will define XRP’s trajectory in the coming days.
Evernorth, the XRP treasury company backed by Ripple, has hinted at a special announcement at Ripple Swell 2026, taking place in New York City from October 27 to 29.
The Federal Reserve meeting on October 27–28 is also being closely monitored
, as macro decisions from the Fed have historically rippled across risk assets including crypto. The November 1 escrow release and whether the XRP Ledger’s lending protocol can finally accumulate enough validator votes are the two other storylines worth tracking closely as October closes out.
